Making New Year’s resolutions for 2018? According to a survey compiled by StatisticsBrain.com, about 41% of Americans make them every year. Out of that number, only about 9% actually achieve their goal.
Let’s be honest…we’ve all failed to keep a resolution or hit a goal at some point in our lives, right? Whether it’s self-improvement, weight-related, money related, personal relationship improvement, or sometimes all the above, we have all set unrealistic goals that we haven’t achieved at one point or another.
For years, my goal has been to lose weight. Every January 1st, I say “Well, I’m going to climb back on the old wagon” and I radically change my diet, force myself to exercise numerous times a week, read countless books, magazines and online articles about weight loss tips, food plans, etc. Guess what? I never stuck to it for more than a couple months. It took me a while to figure why I kept failing on this resolution – one, I tried changing too much too fast and two, I never created a solid step-by-step master plan that had some flexibility in case I made a mistake.
For those of you who want to achieve financial goals, the process is the same. You’ll need to make a realistic plan that not only guides you but also works with your lifestyle. Will there be bumps in the road? Will you make mistakes? I can almost guarantee it. We are human, and life happens (in my case…a bacon pizza and a strawberry margarita). Unexpected expenses arise, and we must be flexible enough to shift our plan a bit. Even with these hiccups, we can accomplish our goals!
