Beat the Heat: 3 Tips to Save on Energy Costs this Summer

This summer, every state in the US has endured record temperatures (as well as humidity), and Maine is no different. Of course, with the high temperatures and humidity, it is natural for us to seek respite in the comforts of our homes with air conditioning. However, the increased use of AC units can lead to higher energy bills. Let’s look at some creative ways to Beat the Heat, save money, and keep our homes at a comfortable temperature.

Opening a window during the cooler mornings and evenings will let the fresh air breeze through your home. Natural ventilation can help maintain a cool temperature in your home without solely relying on AC. To maximize its effectiveness, open windows on opposite sides of your home, creating cross ventilation.

Strategically using curtains, blinds, or shades to block out the sun’s direct heat during peak temperatures can also significantly impact energy costs. This tactic keeps your home shaded during the hottest parts of the day, so your cooling system doesn’t need to work as hard. (This also works in the winter to keep the cold out).

Setting your cooling units to a comfortable but moderate temperature. While putting your AC to the lowest setting is tempting, keeping the temperature around 75-78 degrees strikes a balance between comfort and energy efficiency. Additionally, a programmable thermostat can automatically adjust the cooling schedule based on when you’re at home or away.

Implementing some of these energy savings tips allows you to enjoy summer comfortably without worrying about soaring energy costs. For more information on financial savings and education, email me at bmulligan@newdimensionsfcu.com or call (207) 313-5921 to schedule an appointment.
