Maine Residents Targeted by Sophisticated Tech Support Scam
Local authorities are warning residents about a recent surge in tech support scams. Victims report receiving pop-up messages on their computers falsely indicating a virus infection and instructing them to contact a provided number. Callers are then coerced into believing their personal data is compromised and are directed to withdraw substantial funds and deposit them into Bitcoin ATMs to “resolve” the issue.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) emphasizes that legitimate tech companies do not display unsolicited pop-ups requesting contact or payment. They advise against calling numbers from such pop-ups and recommend verifying any claims by contacting companies directly using official contact information.
The Maine Credit Union League advises members to be cautious of unexpected tech support communications and to report any suspicious activity to their financial institution and the FTC.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid engaging with unsolicited tech support messages, and report any suspected scams to the appropriate authorities.
Protect Yourself:
- Do Not Engage: Legitimate tech companies will not send unsolicited pop-ups requesting you to call them. If you receive such a message, do not call the number or click any links.
- Verify Independently: If contacted by someone claiming to be from tech support, hang up and contact the company directly using official contact information.
- Avoid Unusual Payment Methods: Be wary of anyone asking for payment via Bitcoin or gift cards; legitimate companies do not request payments this way.
If You Suspect a Scam:
- Cease Communication: Immediately stop all contact with the suspected scammer.
- Report the Incident: Notify your financial institution and report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Seek Support: Contact local law enforcement and consumer protection agencies for assistance.
