Why Small Deposits Make a Big Difference

Big savings goals don’t always require big deposits. Sometimes, the smallest steps make the biggest difference.
Whether you’re saving for a vehicle, education, an emergency fund, or something special, setting aside money regularly can help turn your financial goals into reality.
The key isn’t necessarily how much you save at once. It’s developing a habit that works for you.

Small Steps Toward a Big Goal
As part of New Dimensions Federal Credit Union’s What Are You Saving For? Savings Challenge, 17-year-old Caleb is working toward a $2,000 goal to help purchase his first car.
Throughout the summer, Caleb earned money mowing lawns and helping neighbors with odd jobs. But when October arrived, his regular lawn-mowing jobs began winding down.
Rather than putting his savings goal on hold, Caleb came up with a new plan: offering fall yard-cleanup services.
By raking leaves, cleaning out gardens, and taking on seasonal jobs, Caleb found new ways to earn money. More importantly, he made a habit of setting aside a portion of those earnings in his Take Charge savings account.
By the end of October, Caleb hopes to have $850 saved, reaching approximately 43% of his $2,000 goal.
His story shows that consistently saving money, even in small amounts, can lead to meaningful progress.

A Little Can Add Up
You might be surprised how quickly small deposits can grow:

  • $10 per week = $520 in one year
  • $20 per week = $1,040 in one year
  • $25 per week = $1,300 in one year

That’s before any interest your savings may earn!
Consider saving a set amount from each paycheck or setting up automatic transfers to make saving part of your regular routine.
And remember, some weeks you may be able to save more (or less) than others. That’s okay. What matters is continuing to make progress when you can.

Like Caleb, you don’t need to save every dollar you earn to move closer to your goal. Creating a manageable savings plan can help you balance today’s expenses with tomorrow’s opportunities.
